Before the introduction of the airplane, the water-route was often the only way to reach certain places. In addition, huge amounts of goods can be transported this way. Therefore, shipping had an immense influence on trade and even on the location and the growth of cities for a long time. Consider how many big cities are built on rivers or directly by the sea!
